Hatsumi Sensei began our instruction in Amatsu principles by explaining two
important fundamental concepts. He explained that the study of Gairon and Tai Jutsu

Hi Chi Buko Goshin Jutsu
The school of the secret of the opening flower. The secret of the opening flower is the
interplay of nature’s forces of compression and tension in a state of equilibrium. The
expression of the opening of the flower is the bias of the dynamic power of tension
from within and the interplay of compression from without, giving form to the flower.
In the coming into being as form, the tension inside the flower overcomes the
compression of gravity and external force keeping it as a bud. As with all three
dimensional form being part of the Kyu Jutsu cycle of 50/50 balance (a concept of

Therefore, as we move from liquid state to a denser tissue determines how the tissue
reacts. This effect carries on through all tissues from fascia to bone.
To begin to understand how these concepts relate to Amatsu and natural movement
power we need to gain an understanding and awareness of the natural flow of energy
and the forces of nature, both on a tangible and intangible level.
In the cycle of precipitation, water falls from the clouds in the form of rain or snow
and eventually finds its way back to the sea. Water falls from the sky and flows
downhill due to the force of gravity. Once in the sea, water rises in the form of
vapour overcoming gravity via evaporation. As it moves, it forms clouds, which are
then driven, back over land where the process starts all over again.
This cycle involves FU (wind), SUI (water) and the natural forces and energies of
gravity and heat. This is a natural example of the interaction of wind and water
following the laws of attraction and minimal energy.

unhealthy and energy consuming.

Standard methods of evaluating the body were based on Newtonian physics but this
model does not fit our upright bipedal movement against gravity.
Newtonian physics can measure and calculate the strength of structures and the
stresses they become subject to.
In the construction of buildings, especially tall structures, gravity plays a big part in
their stability. The downward compressive force of gravity holds the structure in
place.
This works well until you want to add a horizontal structure to the upright one. This
horizontal structure adds a shear stress to the building and requires reinforcement.
Any additional stresses due to wind or earth tremor complicate the system even
further.
It’s estimated that if the human frame were constructed according to these rules, the
head would be too heavy for the spine to handle. All this before we even begin to
move in three-dimensional space.
Unfortunately, the body is still reviewed and described in outmoded mechanical
anatomical terms. Until the concept of Biotensegrity, the laws describing anatomical
movement were according to Newtonian principles.

In a tensegrity structure, compression elements float in the interspace of the tension
wires. In the body, this would relate to the vertebrae in the spine. Each subsystem
(vertebrae, disc and soft tissue) would be a subsystem of the spines meta system, like
the beehive analogy.
When viewed in this way you can understand their role in balancing tension and

Loads applied to the body distribute their pressure through the network of tension
elements to create a balance. Even a pressure load to a small bone will distribute the
load through the whole system.
A natural movement strategy in tensegrity truss architectural form is the closest
explanation of nature’s laws at work in the human frame.

This bio tensegrity makes the art of upright walking against gravities compression an
effortless act for the human. In Newtonian principles when we walk the meta tarso
pharangeal junction is described as a fulcrum for the whole body weight to project
itself forward in a step.
In a lever system you can only pull down. Muscles when they contract in the body
can only pull us downward. Therefore when the small muscles in the feet contract the
downward pull generated cannot give enough power for a lever such as the meta tarso
pharyngeal joint.
This puts a whole new complexion on the natural movement principles that Hatsumi
explained to us.
Bones floating in a compression, tension network can form into trusses and extend out
from the body like a bridge. This makes the body a weight mover not a weight
bearer. So in walking and especially when your on one leg, the balanced tension

Dr. Stephen Levin in his research of Biotensegrity has studied the pelvis and its
ligamentous arrangement and likened it to a spoked wheel. The pelvis remains
balanced to forces acting both from above and below with long levers. Even the act
of standing on one leg does not compromise this structure of support.
Viewed from the front the pelvis can be likened to the same bicycle wheel analogy.

If you imagine the bicycles wheel as being twisted it forms a leminiscate giving rise
to the paired innominate bones. The sacrum still in the centre is represented by the
hub. The tensegrity across such a structure gives omni directional stability and
power.
Even the balance of the sacrum between the two iliac bones is supported by soft tissue
elements.
To liken the pelvis to an arch suggests that the sacrum is fixed like a locking stone in
a Roman arch or flying buttress.

Form Fit Force Fit
This would require either a form fit or a force fit to secure it in place. Both of these
methods require a lot of friction and are not omni directional flexible and low energy
systems.
The boot mechanism of the sacrum is covered with a slippery surface making form fit
or force fit impractical.
The sacrum actually hangs in front of the pelvis and the angle would simple fall
forward. The tiny movements possible at the boot mechanism articulation also follow
a leminiscate pattern and mirror the pelvic analogy to a twisted bicycle wheel.

The ligaments and soft tissues are “constructed with soft visceoelastic

The difference between a mechanical structure and a human in motion is this nonlinear
flexibility of choice in movement.

In other words, movement of a structure is determined by a concept of causality.

The human frame is not ruled by this concept and is capable of nondeterministic,

In the mechanical structure, movement can be created by a cogged mechanism. With
cogs of different sizes and working at different speeds, movement can be created to
drive machines. For example, smaller cogs influencing larger wheels can drive a
windmill.
In any system like this, there is a critical point where a small force exerted on one of
the cogs could exert the greatest effect on all the cogs.

body.
In the human body, there are many anatomical vulnerable sites where a small force
can exert considerable damage, even death. In budo warrior craft, these points were
studied to gain victory in a fight situation. Even when a person wears armour,
vulnerable places are left exposed at the expense of movement.
Hatsumi teaches the vulnerability of these critical points in the body in his lessons on
Budo. In Japanese, they are called Kyusho and the Kanji or Japanese ideogram for
the word critical is interpreted as meaning danger or opportunity.
In the medicine Hatsumi taught us, he demonstrated the potential opportunity for
these Kyusho to bring about wellness in the body.
By observing motion of a person as they walk he can determine which tensegrity lines
of the soft tissues are compromised. On evaluation, our Orthopaedic tests and muscle
tests verify these findings in a clinical setting.
By applying, a pressure to the compromised Kyusho with an omni directional
flexibility that is delivered by his bodies Tai Jutsu, (Natural Movement) he releases
the critical point.
This pressure does not act locally on the tissue or follow a specific anatomical route
along muscles or fascia. It follows to the depth of the tissue change and can act in a
non-linear dynamic way that matches the tension/compression changes to the
damaged tissue. This is brought about by the ability to palpate deeply into tissue
without force feedback being a resistant force.

Scientific research by Oshman, J. in 1990 has shown that pressure applied to tissue
can affect the viscosity turning a sol back to gel. This has the effect of reducing a

As most of you know, the world of core stabilization has yielded as much attention as Paris Hilton buying a new Chihuahua. The difference: core stabilization warrants most of the attention it gets. I say "most" because as with many catchy terms in the fitness industry, it can be abused with the content that goes into defining these terms. However, for the sake of this article I am going to review what I feel to be the more logical techniques that are involved in stabilizing that snake-like structure we call the spine.

Analyzing Core Stabilization Techniques - Bridging the Gap

What is Core Stabilization?

That's the million dollar question isn't it? If you asked 100 different sport scientists that question, you would get 100 different answers. To me, core stabilization is the ability to create uncompromising stiffness around the spine as to not allow any "energy leaks" during various static or dynamic tasks. You may agree or disagree with me on that definition, but the bottom line is this: Whether you are an elite athlete, construction worker, or receptionist, chances are you will probably go through some sort of back pain in your life. So throw the 6-pack talk out the window for now and start thinking about the spine. If we can ensure the athlete is a column of strength with no loose kinks in the chain, then we can ensure optimal power with minimal force loads on the spine.

First, let's look at the anatomy.

Internal & External Obliques (IO & EO): Involved in flexion, as their forces are redirected to the rectus abominis (RA) to enhance the flexor potential. They are involved in lateral bending, twisting, and stabilization of the lumbar spine (McGill, 1991a, 1991b, 1992; Juker, McGill, and Kropf, 1998). Lastly, they are involved in active expiration (Henke et al., 1988).

Transverse Abdominis: Rotates thorax from side to side, increases interthoracic pressure, and is involved in defecation, urination, childbirth. The TA is also an anticipatory muscle.

Rectus Abdominis (RA): The major flexor of the trunk. It forms a continuous hoop around the spine by transferring the forces from the obliques. The upper and lower RA are activated together and at similar rates during flexion (Lehman & McGill, 2001): So throw your "upper and lower abdominal exercises" out the window.

Rotatores: Have a high number of muscle spindles and thus serve more as a spinal positioner than a rotator of the spine (Nitz & Peck, 1986). They are most active when trying to resist the rotation of the spine that the obliques and latissimus are likely causing.

Extensors

Longissimus & Iliocostalis: Have thoracic and lumbar components. These are the major back extensors.

Multifidus: Extension of the spine but only through the correcting of spinal joints that are enduring stress. Line of action actually contributes to shearing forces of superior vertebrae.

Quadratus Lumborum (QL): Bilateral support wall or stabilizer for the lumbar spine. The QL is active during flexion, extension, and lateral bending of the spine and maybe one of the few muscles that doesn't turn off during the flexion/relaxation phenomenon.

Psoas: Major hip flexor. May assist in some stabilization due to its orientation (Origin is T12-L5).

Core Stabilization Mechanisms: Abdominal Hollowing vs. Abdominal Bracing. The abdominal hollowing technique was essentially developed from a group of Australian sport scientists (Richardson et al. 1999). This "Queensland group" determined that the transverse abdiminis (TA) and multifidus (MT) muscles in particular, were very important muscles for motor patterning. They found that following injury to the back, the TA and MT underwent motor disturbances that had profound effects on the motor patterning of the body. Because further injury would just add to these effects leading to a chronic state of poor patterning and pain, the Queensland group argued that only specific abdominal activation techniques could break this poor programming. Thus was born the abdominal hollowing technique: This technique involves the drawing in of the abdomen in an attempt to isolate the TA, while relaxing the surrounding musculature (RA, IO, EO).

The abdominal bracing technique was primarily developed - or more appropriately, coined - by Canadian biomechanist Stuart McGill. This technique involves the co-activation of all the muscles surrounding the spine (RA, IO, EO, TA, MT, Latissimus, QL, and the extensors) in an attempt to create 360 degrees of stability. While bracing, the individual doesn't draw in or push out, but rather "braces" or widens the trunk. If you think about what you would do if someone was to punch you in the stomach: You would set or brace for the punch and effectively create stability all the way around the spine. To Brace or Hollow: That is the question.

Much of the data that came out of the Queensland research was misinterpreted. Because they were working with injured individuals with malfunctioning motor patterns, the techniques they came up with were an attempt to disrupt the faulty patterns and educate the patients on abdominal control. Moreover, the TA anticipates trunk, upper and lower limb movement as well as protects the spine (Hodges, 1999). This anticipatory and protective function can be lost with acute or chronic low back pain. However, many clinicians took this information and regarded the techniques as a way of creating optimal core stability during various tasks. Thus, abdominal hollowing seems to be the preferred choice of many physiotherapists, strength coaches, chiropractors and kinesiologists for core stabilization.

Enter Stuart McGill! Not dismissing the importance of these muscles in their role as intra-abdominal pressure creators and stabilizers, McGill and others have since argued that this is simply not enough to endure tasks of even moderate intensity. Furthermore, during athletic events, unpredictable forces from all directions occur in almost any sport. Specifically, if a posterior perturbation - or unsuspected push from behind - occurs on the spine (lets say a defensive stiff-arm as you lean into a defender in basketball), abdominal hollowing produces the same resistance to the force that no activation does and results in an increase in spinal flexion (vs. 43% reduction of spinal flexion when bracing is used) (Vera-Garcia et al. 2007). As kettlebell lifter and educator Brett Jones says, if you took a cardboard box on its side and loaded it from the top, the box would crumble. Just ask Human Motion's Cliff Harvey what would have happened if he drew his stomach in while attempting world record lifts in weightlifting: He too would have crumbled. Furthermore, it is almost certain that if you try to contract only the TA, you will have activity in the IO and EO as well.

When the muscles surrounding the spine co-contract, they create a stiffness that is greater than the sum of the individual muscle stiffness (McGill, 2006). Thus, during the hollowing procedure, you are actually inhibiting the potential for optimal stiffness, ultimately limiting performance. You would think that in order to brace properly and ensure "superstiffness" that you would need to have an all out contraction during most activities. However, this doesn't seem to be the case as the first 25% of a maximal abdominal contraction creates sufficient stiffness for most activities (Brown & McGill, 2005). During 1RM lifts such as Cliff's world record attempts however, a maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of all the surrounding musculature is necessary to withstand the massive force.

Let's hug it out: We are dealing with apples and oranges

There seems to be a lack of understanding as to the different techniques used between physios and strength coaches for core stabilization and activation. When a patient is seeing a physio, they are exactly that - a patient. Most of the time they are coming from an injury and have consequently obtained faulty patterns within their muscle sequencing. On the other hand, they could have had years of overuse injuries or poor gait biomechanics that has led to muscular imbalances. Thus, abdominal hollowing seems to be the technique of choice to help create that control that probably was never there even before the "injury" brought them to rehab. THIS IS PERFECTLY FINE. This is our group of apples. Our group of oranges are either these same patients coming from physio or our uninjured group of individuals who need to get stronger. Once these individuals are able to withstand heavier forces and are loaded up with weights, abdominal hollowing is no longer sufficient to lift this kind of weight, while sparing the spine. Thus, the abdominal brace must be taught. Herein lies the problem. We are constantly nagging each other (various health care practitioners) about the different techniques used. We need to remember that it is the needs of the client/patient that is our primary concern. WE NEED TO EDUCATE AND PREPARE THEM FOR THE NEXT STEP. Physios: Inform the patient that if they are an athlete or they are going to be lifting weights in the future, they will have to learn both techniques. Strength coaches: Actually integrate both techniques into your training. Isolate then integrate. It is a great way to allow the client to achieve initial success (abdominal hollowing) and then allow them to see the big picture of lifting heavier loads (abdominal bracing).

An integrated team approach can produce great success for the athlete, however, all members need to be on the same page even if their philosophies differ. Work with each other to produce the best results for the client/patient. Your athlete will ultimately be stronger, safer, and less confused in the process!

When we opened the chest cavity the first thing I could smell was not formaldehyde. I could smell cigarette smoke. It was a real eye opener. Imagine my surprise when I found that this former smoker's lungs were black through and through. There were no pink spots to be found. The lungs were black on the outside and they were black on the inside.

After slicing through one of the lungs, we found that it was the same degree of blackness all the way through. Everything was black. I understood right then and there what smoking could do to the human body.

When I was a young boy, I remember that my great aunt had emphysema. I can still see the oxygen canister that was ever present in her home. It was never far away. Life has many hardships but I think some of the bitterest are the ones we bring upon ourselves.

Practically everyone knows that smoking is bad and yet so many people continue to smoke. If you are a smoker you probably have thought of quitting many times. Nicotine is very addictive. Yet, people can and do quit.

My mother was a smoker. I was stationed far away in Hawaii for my first tour in the Navy and it would still bother me whenever I thought about her smoking. One day I sent her a subliminal tape designed to help her quit. In a few weeks she reported that she did indeed quit.

Smoking increases the risk of developing many diseases such as cancer, emphysema and heart disease. Believe it or not, even the possibility of developing gum disease is increased by smoking.

The cost of cigarettes is pretty high too. I was in the store the other day and the person next to me purchased a pack of cigarettes. I was surprised to hear the clerk ask for four dollars and twenty-five cents. Some people smoke a pack or more per day. The cost adds up. Seems like cigarettes are easy prey for the taxing authorities.

I don't know how you feel, but it appears that there are plenty of good reasons to quit smoking. I still have a relative that smokes and I hope she quits too. I'd like to see her preserve and protect her health.

Most people may not understand that constipation is the number one affliction underlying every ailment attacking the human body. What goes into our body must come out in one form or another. If it does not come out by normal means, it stagnates and toxins build up and therefore are released back into the body resulting in disease. We then suffer from skin eruptions, fatigue, inflammation, congestion and perhaps die a painful death such as with cancer.

Utilizing charts and graphs to illustrate his points, Dr. Walker takes you on a tour of each organ and system of the body from head to toe. He explains how they function and then explains their connection to the health of the colon.

For example, did you know that the seemingly insignificant organ (or gland) known as the appendix actually plays an important role in coming to the body's defense when waste material coming from the small intestine is potentially harmful to the welfare of the individual? The answer as to how is on page 84.

Other topics of interest addressed in this small paperback are hay fever, insomnia, fatigue, tinnitus, loss of hearing, diabetes, pleuresy, heart disease and numerous other afflictions. Dr. Walker's advice is to cleanse your colon with a series of irrigations called colonics.

Finally, who in their right mind would choose to have a colostomy (i.e. removal of sections of the colon and loss of normal function of the bowel) after his grim description of the devastating results of a neglected colon? Answer: God forbid, not me, if at all possible!

In his own words, Dr. Walker concludes: "Be prudent. Be wise. It is better to prevent what you cannot cure. Don't take my word for it. Prove it to yourself by taking colonics. My own life will not be affected in the least by what you do or don't do. But the life it may save may be your own." (p. 112)

Q&A's

Would I recommend the book? Answer: Yes.

Why? Answer: I found this book to be easy to read and understand. It was like taking a mini course in anatomy, a subject I am interested in. It is an excellent resource for laymen in the health industry.

Would I follow his advice and take colonics? Answer: I don't know. Perhaps. What I will do and have done, however, is look for other natural means to cleanse my colon.

What didn't I like about the book? Answer: The use of charts and illustrations was helpful, but I was disappointed in their poor quality. They were obviously xeroxed reproductions of colored originals, so the drawings were too dark and the captions were too small to read. My suggestion would be to maybe visit your local library and check out a pictorial book on anatomy to refer to while you're reading Colon Health. But hey, short of being an actual medical text, it is an excellent read. I highly recommend it.
